For the first time in the history of India, four convicts were hanged at the same time.

NEW DELHI: Seven years after a young medical student was gang-raped and tortured on a moving bus in Delhi, a crime that jolted the nation, four of her killers were hanged at 5.30 am on Friday. The pre-dawn execution took place less than two hours after the Supreme Court dismissed the final petition of the convicts.

Mukesh Singh, Pawan Gupta, Vinay Sharma and Akshay Kumar Singh, were held guilty of gang-raping the young woman on the night of December 16, 2012, so brutally that she died of her injuries a fortnight later.

The four were hanged in Delhi’s Tihar Jail, South Asia’s largest prison complex that houses more than 16,000 inmates. where they spent the last few hours in isolation and separate cells, barely eating.

They refused to eat and were up much of the night, said officials. The entire jail was on lockdown since last night, and officials said, few other prisoners in Asia’s largest prison facility could sleep a wink ahead of the first execution since 2015.

The convicts were woken at 3.30 am, around the time they learnt they had reached the end of the road in courts.

For the first time in the history of India, four convicts were hanged at the same time.

Their death warrants were deferred by a court thrice on the grounds that they had not exhausted all their legal remedies and that the mercy petition of one or the other was before the president.

On Thursday, however, all the legal routes seemed to have closed for the four men.

The Supreme Court refused to entertain Mukesh Singh’s last-ditch plea that he was not in the city when the crime took place. A bench of Justices of R Bhanumati, Ashok Bhushan and AS Bopanna said he had exhausted all his remedies and no fresh evidence can be entertained.

The apex court also dismissed Akshay Kumar’s plea challenging the rejection of his second mercy petition by President Ram Nath Kovind, saying no ground was made out for a judicial review of the decision.

On a parallel track, a Delhi court dismissed the pleas of Akshay Kumar, Pawan Gupta and Vinay Sharma seeking stays on their execution.

Hanging Seen As Justice, At Last:

The Inhumanity That Shook India, Seven Years Ago:

On December 16, 2012, the 23-year-old woman had watched a movie with her friend and was looking for a ride home when she was lured into a bus by six men.

For the next few hours, the woman was subjected to a savage assault and even tortured with an iron rod before being dumped on a road, naked, bleeding and her intestines spilling out. She died a few days later in a Singapore hospital amid angry street protests across India and international revulsion.

Two other men were convicted for the crime. Ram Singh allegedly committed suicide inside Tihar Jail in 2013 while the trial was still on and the sixth, a juvenile, was released in 2015 after spending three years in a correctional home, even though he was said to be the most brutal of the men.

India changed its laws on crimes against women after the horrific gang-rape and killing. Earlier this year, the government also asked the Supreme Court to bring laws that would be more considerate towards the victim and would not be misused by convicts to stall their sentence.

NEW DELHI: The Shaheen Bagh protest site, where hundreds of Islamists, largely elderly women, were stationed for several months for the agitation against Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), has been cleared by Delhi Police personnel. Police have detained 6 women and 3 men from Shaheen Bagh for violating Section 144 prohibitory orders after they showed resistance to police action.

The eviction of protesters comes two days after Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced the national capital was going into a complete lockdown to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus, which has already claimed over 13,000 lives worldwide and is keeping the Indian establishment and health professionals on their toes.

In a communication on Monday, Delhi Police Commissioner S N Srivastava ordered that all border pickets in Delhi be sealed with “immediate effect”. All essential services will continue without any hinderance, he said.

On Sunday, police imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) in Delhi till March 31 in view of the coronavirus outbreak, banning protests, and other gatherings. Section 144 of the CrPC bans assembly of four or more people in one place.

DCP South East said, “People at the protest site in Shaheen Bagh were requested today to clear the site as lockdown has been imposed. But after they refused, action was taken against violators as the assembly was unlawful. Protest site has been cleared. Some protesters have been detained.”

Mama Ji Returns: Shivraj Singh Chouhan Sworn In As MP CM For 4rth Term

Calling fighting the coronavirus as his top priority, Chouhan said, “We will defeat this disease.”

BHOPAL (Madhya Pradesh): Exactly a week after the 15-month-long Kamal Nath government was reduced to a minority following the rebellion of 22 Congress MLAs, senior BJP leader and three-time former chief minister of Madhya Pradesh Shivraj Singh Chouhan was sworn in as the CM of the state for the fourth time on Monday.

The 61-year-old was chief minister of Madhya Pradesh for three terms between 2005 and 2018 before the BJP lost the 2018 assembly elections after voters gave a fractured mandate. The BJP had won 109 seats while the Congress won 114 and the latter formed the government with the support of four Independents, one SP and two BSP members.

The legislature party members — wearing masks due to coronavirus threat and sitting two chairs away from each other — unanimously elected Chouhan as their leader.

Due to the coronavirus situation, no BJP leader from Delhi travelled to Bhopal. The BJP’s central observers Arun Singh and Vinay Sahasrabuddhe joined the meeting via video conferencing from Delhi.

Senior BJP MLA and ex-leader of opposition Gopal Bhargava proposed the name of Chouhan as legislature party leader, which was endorsed by Vijay Shah, Meena Singh, Paras Jain and other MLAs.

After this process, Arun Singh announced Chouhan’s name as the leader of the BJP legislature party. Chouhan, who thanked the MLAs, accused the outgoing Congress dispensation of “ruining” the state, and said he would change the way of running the government from now.

Calling fighting the coronavirus as his top priority, Chouhan said, “We will defeat this disease.”

“We will improve our governance….the shortcomings so far will be removed,” he said.

He said he will go to Mantralaya (state secretariat) after taking the oath and sit till late night to review measures taken to deal with the novel coronavirus outbreak.

Union Minister Narendra Singh Tomar was another strong contender for the CM post but the BJP chose Chouhan for his experience and because his popularity was still intact.
