Judiciary Shown Mirror As Nation Celebrates Police Encounter Of Hyderabad Rapists
The woman’s sister hoped the encounter killing would scare others indulging in such crimes against women.
HYDERABAD (Telangana): All four accused in the rape-and-murder case of a 25-year-old woman veterinarian near here last month were killed in an exchange of fire with police on Friday morning, police said. The incident took place around 5.30 am when the accused were taken to the site of the offence for the reconstruction of the scene of the crime as part of the investigation, a senior police official said.
“They (accused) snatched weapons from police and fired on police and tried to escape… police fired in retaliation in which the four accused died,” a senior police official told media in Hyderabad. Two policemen were also injured, he said.
The four persons — Mohammed Areef, Jollu Shiva, Jollu Naveen and Chennakeshavulu — were accused of gruesome rape and murder of 26-year-old Priyanka Reddy.
Reddy Family, Nirbhaya’s Family, Telangana Celebrities, Nation Celebrate:
The father of the woman veterinarian said he was very happy that all the four accused were killed in an encounter and thanked the police and Telangana government for it.
“We watched on TV that they were killed in an encounter. We are very happy. Even people are happy. I thank the Telangana government and police for the encounter. I thank everyone who stood by us,” the woman’s father said.
The woman’s sister hoped the encounter killing would scare others indulging in such crimes against women.
“We are happy. We did not expect this (killing in the encounter). We thought they would be hanged through courts,” she said. “We thank everyone who stood by us. With this incident people should be scared to do such crimes (against women)” she told media.
Nirbhaya’s parents were the first to welcome the action. The mother of Nirbhaya, the 23-year-old paramedic student who died days after being gang-raped in December 2012, appealed to authorities to not punish the policemen involved in the encounter.
Nirbhaya’s father also welcomed the encounter and said the family’s wait for justice ended early. “The family of the Hyderabad doctor will not have to wait for justice for seven years like us. Police did the right thing,” he said.

Police Version Challenged In Court:
Following a writ petition by civil rights activists seeking judicial intervention into the reported encounter of the four accused in the rape of murder of a Hyderabad vet, the Telangana High court on Friday directed the government to preserve the bodies of the four men till Monday, December 9.
Responding to the writ petition, which suspected foul play in the incident, the High Court directed officials to submit a video recording of the post-mortem in a CD to the Principal District Judge, Mahaboobnagar for all the accused.
The Court has also further directed that the dead bodies of the four deceased be preserved till 8 pm on Monday.
The Principal District Judge, Mahaboobnagar will receive and submit the CD of the post-mortem to Registrar General of the HC Telangana by Saturday evening as directed by the HC.
The activists in their writ petition stated that the police’s version of events has raised serious concerns.
“It would be a fallacy to even imagine that some kind of justice has been served by abandoning all due process and committing such killings. Is it permissible for police personnel to play judge, jury, executioner and mete out fatal justice in this manner? Is the ‘satisfying of the collective conscience’ in such a brazenly unlawful and murderous way healthy for a democracy? This is absolute violation of rule of law and constitutional guarantees,” the petition noted.
Citing media reports, the activists said, “It is clear that all the four accused/suspects were in police custody, thus completely unarmed, and in all probabilities handcuffed. The recreation of the events at the crime scene at 3 am in the morning raise further serious concerns into these extra-judicial killings.”
Cyberabad Commissioner VC Sajjanar, however, clarified on Friday that the accused were not handcuffed.
The postmortem of the bodies was conducted at Mahaboobnagar District Hospital under the supervision of the Superintendent of the Hospital and a team of forensic experts from Gandhi Hospital in Hyderabad.
On Friday, the four accused were killed when they were taken to Chatanpally to recover the phone, wallet and power bank of the victim, Disha. Disha’s burnt body was found close to the spot of the reported encounter near the underpass of Shadnagar Outer Ring Road (ORR) on November 27.
Dishonouring Pre-Poll Alliance Not A Good Sign For Democracy: Gadkari
He said that the Shiv Sena-NCP-Congress alliance government in Maharashtra would not continue for long.
NEW DELHI: Union Surface Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari Wednesday said that the party which makes a pre-poll alliance with the other party and then deserts that after the results were declared and inks pact with other party is unprincipled and not good for democracy. This is against the principles of an alliance, he added.
Gadkari claimed that the Shiv Sena-NCP-Congress alliance government in Maharashtra would not continue for a long period and the Shiv Sena will have to pay heavily for this unholy alliance.
In an interview to a news channel, Gadkari said that the BJP does not have any threats in poll-bound Jharkhand state as the state is fast marching on the path of progress under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Raghubar Das. People want development and will re-elect Raghubar Das government for development, he said.
He said that after the BJP came to power in the state we made maximum national highways and much development is achieved in the road building sector, he added.
Commenting on coming together of all the parties against BJP in Maharashtra, Gadkari said that it was against the principles and did not augur well for democracy when a party breaks the pre-poll alliance and goes with the other. Shiv Sena had sought votes against the Congress and the NCP.
People of Maharashtra gave a decisive mandate to BJP-Shiv Sena alliance. At this juncture, only to grab the chief minister’s post, Shiv Sena allied with the Congress and NCP leaving the pre-poll alliance with BJP. The masses did not certainly like this, he said.
Secondly, the Congress and NCP do not subscribe to the Hindutva philosophy of Shiv Sena which late Bal Thackeray had injected into the party and which the Shiv Sena held most sacred. It is clear that this alliance has no principled basis and as such it will not last long because it is an opportunistic alliance. This is deceiving the people of Maharashtra who had voted for BJP-Shiv Sena alliance and rejected the Congress and NCP.
“Shiv Sena let go its principle of Hindutva and entered into an alliance with the Congress. They will have to pay a heavy price for this unprincipled alliance.”
“I feel that the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance was for Maharashtra, for Marathi and for Hindutva but unfortunately that did not happen. Whatever happened was not good for the state.”
Stating that the Indian economy is the fastest-growing economy in the world, Gadkari said some problems are there due to the global economy, some due to supply and demand while some others are due to business cycle.
“By 2030 we will emerge as the world’s third-largest economy. We have that potential and we are working in that direction. These are temporary ups and downs and this will change and we will definitely surge ahead“, he said.
Gadkari also touched the Ayodhya issue saying that we need to think on the issues like this or Article 370 rising above the politics. These are issues of national interest. We must have one national flag, one prime minister and one constitution. There can’t be two PMs, two flags and two constitutions. Therefore, it was people’s demand that this discriminatory and temporary Article 370 and 35A should be removed. And you must have seen that when these articles were dropped people across the nation including J & K celebrated the event. This is the major achievement of our government.
Same is the case with Ayodhya Ramjanmasthan issue. We never wanted to derive political benefits from both these issues. They are the issues of the country’s identity and pride. Now with the Supreme Court decision, the way for construction of a grand Ram Temple at Ayodhya has been paved. There should not politics on this issue now. We want that all people should cooperate in the construction of the grand temple so that it can present an example of solidarity of Indians to the world community. Lord Sri Ram did not belong to any religion or sect, he belonged to all the Indians and we must accept him like this only.
Brushing aside any possibility of political happenings in Maharashtra and Haryana affecting the poll results in Jharkhand, Gadkari said that the development works conducted under the leadership of chief minister Raghubar Das in association with Central Government headed by PM Modi will dominate the elections. People will surely support him for these works he had accomplished.
17.06% Polling Till 11 AM For By-Elections To 15 Assembly Seats In Karnataka
The polling in the 15 assembly constituencies in Karnataka began peacefully at 0700 hrs today.
BENGALURU (Karnataka): Casting of votes for by-elections to 15 Assembly constituencies commenced at 7.00 am today. Polling will continue till 6.00 p.m.
The constituencies going to by-polls are Athani, Kagwad, Gokak, Yellapur, Hirekerur, Ranibennur, Vijayanagar, Chikballapur, KR Puram, Yeshwanthpur, Mahalakshmi Layout, Shivajinagar, Hoskote, KR Pet and Hunsur. People were seen standing in queues to cast their votes at various polling booths in different parts of the state.
By-elections in two Assembly segments–Muski (Raichur district) and R R Nagar (Bengaluru) have been withheld due to litigation in the Karnataka High Court over their results in the May 2018 state Assembly elections.
There are 165 candidates in fray seeking a mandate from 37 lakh 82 thousand 681 registered voters in 4185 polling booths. The counting of votes will be on December 9th.
The by-elections were necessitated due to the disqualification of 14 Congress and three JD(S) party rebel legislators, leading to the fall of the Congress-JD(S) coalition government in the state.
BJP has fielded 13 of the 15 disqualified MLAs after the Supreme Court allowed them to contest the by-elections. R Shankar from Ranebennur and Roshan Baig from Shivajinagar are two of the disqualified MLAs who are not contesting.
AIR correspondent reports that out of 224 seats in the Karnataka assembly, 17 are vacant and the by-election is now being held for 15 seats. Maski in Raichur district and R R Nagar in Bengaluru south-west are two assembly segments where elections were not announced as there is a litigation against the candidates who had won the May 2018 Assembly election.
Hence in the House strength of 222, the magic number is 112. BJP has the strength of 105 members including the Speaker and lone Independent MLA support it. So it has to win at least six more seats to gain a simple majority.
