It may be recalled that Gujarat reported its first double-digit single-day jump in coronavirus cases on April 4, when 17 new cases were reported.

Some Good News Too:

Gujarat, which has nearly the same population as Italy, France and Spain, reported less number of COVID-19 cases in 35 days after detection of the first case in the state as compared to the three European countries, Dr Ravi said on Sunday.

The coronavirus cases in Gujarat rose to 3,071 in 35 days since the first patient was found, compared to 80,536 in Italy, 56,972 in France, and 94,410 cases in Spain, she said.

The population of Italy is 6.04 crore, France-6.5 crore, Spain-4.7 crore, while the population of Gujarat is 6.25 crore, the official informed.

This is mainly due to measures like lockdown and containment strategy for people returning from abroad, state principal secretary (health) Dr Ravi told reporters.

Dr Ravi said that 10500 beds are available in 61 dedicated COVID special hospitals in the state. She said that the state has adequate stocks of Hydroxy Chloroquine and Azithromycin medicines, N95 and 3 layer masks and PPE kits.

1061 ventilators are available in Government hospitals while 17 ventilators available in private hospitals. Order for 1,000 more ventilators has also been placed.

Meanwhile, the state government has withdrawn the permission of opening of small shops and businesses from Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara and Rajkot city.

Earlier, it was permitted in outside the COVID-19 containment areas of the state, but after the meeting with Municipal Commissioners, District Collectors and associations of shop and business owners, it was decided not to open the shops and small business till May 3 in these areas.
