NCERT Partners Google to Teach Students Digital Safety

Google and NCERT on February 6 signed a pact to integrate a course on ‘Digital Citizenship and Safety’ in information and communication technology curriculum.

“Internet can be used be phenomenonly in helping us, it has a potential of damaging the social structure and damaging an individual. It is extremely important for us to understand how can we keep ourselves safe,” Union School Education Secretary Anil Swarup said on the occasion.

He further said the safety awareness programme with Google can be scaled by training teachers on latest development that takes place in internet space.

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has a curriculum on IT and communication technologies embedded in teachers training programme.

The curriculum developed by NCERT in collaboration with Google will be used to train students from class I – class XII across 1.4 million schools in India where they will learn how to become good and responsible digital citizens.

“We have provided NCERT lot of content that was ready with Google, tools and tips about internet use. We also segregated the curriculum into four different area. we have a different set of programme for different age group,” Google India Director, Trust and Safety, Sunita Mohanty said.

The curriculum is spread into four themes – being smart, being safe, being a digital citizen and being future ready.

“This will help a student identify between good content and bad content. In advance classes, we are talking about privacy, device management, intellectual property and reputation management,” Mohanty said.

Google will not charge any fee for the training, she said.

“We are working on the internet for all in India and the purpose of such programme is to create good experience over the internet,” Mohanty said.

1225 Premier Institution Graduates Placed in Backward Areas

The Ministry of Human Resource Development has recruited more than 1200 highly qualified and motivated graduates from including IITs and NITs to teach in Engineering Colleges in States/UTs like Andaman & Nicobar, Assam, Bihar, Jammu & Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Tripura, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand etc. This is the first time that such a measure has been taken to improve the quality of education.

While addressing a press conference Union Minister for Human Resource Development Shri Prakash Javadekar said that these bright minds will bring with them the openness to innovation, new methods of teaching and enthusiasm to serve and act as agents of change.

He further said that this initiative will help meet the aspirations of youth in the backward areas and fulfil the vision of Prime Minister. He hoped that these teachers would contribute to the entire educational eco-system of the backward areas, apart from promoting a start-up culture among students.

A public appeal was given to the MTech and PhD students from the premier institutions to express interest to work in these backward areas and serve the nation. There was an overwhelming response to the call, and more than 5000 highly qualified persons applied. The interviews were conducted in 20 NITs by constituting expert teams.

The entire process of giving a call and selection has been completed through a competitive and rigorous process of selection done through NITs in a record two-month period. Finally, 1225 candidates were selected and they have joined 53 colleges in these states. The new faculty will train the youngsters in a host of technical institutions for the next 3-years.

Each of the new faculty will be paid Rs. 70,000 per month and the Government is planning to spend about Rs. 375 Cr in a three-year period on this initiative. With this measure, more than 1 lakh engineering students in the most backward areas would be benefited with better quality education.

The reason for backwardness was essentially because of lack of quality teachers in these areas. In many of these institutions have vacancies of teaching faculty (some of them have 40% vacancies), The States have requested Ministry of HRD to help to find teaching support.

TEQIP project:

MHRD started the Technical Education Quality Improvement Project (TEQIP-III) for improving the quality of engineering graduates at a cost of Rs. 2,300 Cr to be implemented in 3-year period till 2020. The focus is on the most-backward states like Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, North-East, Rajasthan, MP etc.

Under this project, all the Government engineering colleges are selected for direct intervention, and all private engineering colleges are selected for indirect intervention.

The measures include:

  • Institution-based: accreditation of the courses through NBA, governance reforms, improving the processes, digital initiatives, securing autonomy for the colleges.
  • Student-based: improving the quality of teaching, teacher training, equipping the classrooms, revision of syllabus, industry interaction, compulsory internships for students, training the students in industry-relevant skills, preparing them for the GATE exam etc.

High-quality teachers selected: 

It is to be noted that 86% of the teachers are from premier institutions like IITs, NITs, IISERs, IIITs etc. Nearly a fourth of them are PhDs (in most of these institutions, so far, there are NO PhD teachers)

Due to PAN India selection, the selected faculty are coming from 369 districts of 26 states, bringing an All India character to these backward colleges.

Its known as a Paradise on earth. but for years now, Kashmir has been in the news for all the wrong reasons. Youth in the beleaguered valley were left desolate and directionless in circumstances beyond their control. Not anymore. For a new Kashmir is fast emerging and centres like the CM’s Super 50 civil services coaching centre is part of the story.

These are the young emerging stars of Kashmir who through their grit and determined hard work have cleared the country’s prestigious civil services examination. Now they are an inspiration for other Kashmiri youth as they get busy in this little room, to fulfil the biggest aspiration of their lives.These are glimpses of a changing Kashmir. This is the CM Super 50 Civil Services coaching centre, which has been started recently. With this unique initiative, young people are not only happy but also fulfilling their dreams of bright future.

Specialists dealing with civil services coaching prepare them for the prelims helping them complete the course in time and qualify for the Mains.

Half the students here are girls who believe that this is a golden opportunity saving them the tough and expensive task of coaching in capital Delhi.

For the last several years, Jammu & Kashmir has been performing very well in the civil services, and many young people have even made it to the top. Among them is the IAS topper Shah Faisal in 2009. Moreover, the number of candidates to be selected in IAS from Jammu and Kashmir has only increased.

In the year 2012 and 13,11 candidates made it. the number was 10 in 2015, 09 in 2016, 12 in 2016 and the highest number of 14 youths last year made it to the most prestigious service in the country.

Every District in the Country to Host Youth Parliament

Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore has said that youth parliament will be organized in every district of the country this year.

Addressing the valedictory ceremony of 22nd National Youth Festival at Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh Rathore said, the youth of the country will sit together in the Youth Parliament and discuss ideas to build a New India.

Curtains came down on 22nd National Youth Festival on Tuesday in Greater Noida. The festival was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 12 through video conferencing. Nearly 6000 youths from across the country participated in it.

Addressing the closing ceremony, Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore said that his Ministry will be organising youth Parliament in every district of the country to throw light on issues and ideas related to youth.

At the 4-day event, youth focussed on building a roadmap for New India. Health, culture, environment, attitude and behaviour, education, employment and sustainable development featured during the interaction.

The event kicked off on the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda. Youth got an opportunity to listen to views of Prime Minister, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Rathore.

22nd National youth Festival has been successful in awakening youth towards self-motivation, self-advancement through dialogue on Ideas.
