Bulk of the rumours that triggered panic among people of northeastern states in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra were sourced from Pakistan, Union Home secretary RK Singh said on Saturday. Appeals and assurances of safety by the Karnataka government notwithstanding, people from North East continued to flee the state in hordes for the third consecutive day on Friday, driven by rumours of impending attacks by Muslim groups. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has expressed confidence that the day is not far when the controversial AFSPA will be withdrawn from the state very much during the tenure of his government. Imposition of penalties and cancellation of contracts with private defence companies which fail to meet prescribed security standards were among the recommendations by industry body ASSOCHAM on the security audit of such firms submitted to Defence Ministry. Taking forward development strategy to keep Maoists at bay in Jharkhand, Union Min Jairam Ramesh said a special programme would begin in Latehar from October to drive out the ultras from the district.
